April Aloha Everyone!
I would like to offer up a big THANK YOU to everyone who came out to the meeting last night - I always look forward to these meetings and a chance to play ukulele with some great uke folks! Last night there were seven of us, but when we were all playing and singing together we sounded like we were twice that. I think Terry B.'s baritone playing really helped give us some bottom end and added to the volume. Love that Baritone Terry!
We did work on a couple of new songs - Lovesick Blues, which is now on the NUkeS website. We also did a really fun version of "All Together Now" by the Beatles which was led by the fabulous Jill E. Bean on her cool long necked flea. Thanks for suggesting that one Jill. I will have a link to that song on the website soon. We also plunked some favorites from our list of standards.
Also of note - Karen D. debuted her new ukulele - a very nice Lanakai - sounds and looks great. Nice uke and thanks for adding your ukulele chops to the mix.
I invited eveyone to think of some songs that they would like us to learn and to email me these ideas - if you just have a song title that's fine, I'm sure I can find chords and lyrics for most any song, but if you have a link to the song lyrics and chords that would be extra great. So please send me song ideas so we can expand our song list.
John reminded us of the passing of Don Ho this week - he was 76 years old and next meeting we will have to do a NUkeS version of Tiny Bubbles in memory of him.
We also discussed the Jake Shimabukuro concert being held June 7, 2007, 7:30 p.m. at the Laura Turner Concert Hall, that's in the new Schermerhorn Symphony Center. We briefly discussed all going together but I'm not sure that's going to work. There may be quite a few of us going but we will probably not be sitting together; however, I suggested that perhaps we could all get together after the show and go grab a cup of coffee (and maybe something sweet to eat).
In addition, we talked about making a NUkeS appearance at the Rochelle Center sometime soon. I was recently contacted by a representative there and they would love to have us come out to play our ukes and sing for the kids there at Rochelle. I'll send out an email about this as things develope.
I briefly mentioned the fact that our next meeting on May 16th will be the one year mark for the Nashville Ukulele Society. I may have some special uke related give-aways for the meeting and maybe some cake and ice cream. Don't miss it.
Thanks again for another fun evening of uke music. Until next time, keep your ukulele in your hand.
